What is it?

Momos are kinds of dumplings that are popular in Nepal, Tibet, Northeastern regions of India that is stuffed with choice of meat or vegetables. It is made of all purpose flour and water that can be shaped to different types. Ingredients used for filling momos are simple and all it takes a good binding and steam it and momos are ready. Though cooking time is less than 30 minutes, preparation time takes few hours and if you have enough time, it makes a perfect appetizer with Asian foods. As chicken momos is one of the favorite appetizers for kids, it can be made at home to perfection. If you are creative you can twist the ingredients to match one’s taste.

Though it is a simple process of making, tricky part I would call it is for shaping to dumpling shape. Making dough to too thinner or thicker will not yield good dumplings but as you master between thickness you can come out as a champ. You don’t need to go to Asian or Indian-Chinese restaurant anymore. Once you understand and try it for a few times, then never an issue.

What it tastes like?

A taste of spice flavored chicken with dipping sauce

It is a little hard to define the taste of momos as soy sauce is one of the main ingredients has different types that tastes different but here we have used soy sauce which is light in color that adds salty, tangy, spicy in taste. What you may add soy sauce, the strength of its flavor may little differ from your preparation but the key is to make sure you are not adding too much of it.

Other variations are beef, pork momos and If you are not a meat eater, veggie momos are the substitutions yet great in taste. When defining the taste of  Chicken momos, chicken is one meat that is bland in taste (my personal opinion) and fat content is lesser when compared to other meats thus having less juicy and flavor. But chicken has its unique characteristics that when its is rubbed with any spices or sauces or curries it perfectly blends with its counterpart that you can completely take over the control of its taste whereas other meats exhibits its taste with its ingredients.

Goes well with?

Just as a snack or most of the Asian foods

We cannot separate momos and dipping sauce that compliments each other very well. I’m a big fan of spicy food, so have made red hot dipping sauce though choice of chutney or any other sauces would also be good enough. I have also shown how to make a dipping sauce.

Mix all the ingredients from Table 1 to make a smooth and pliable dough and keep aside covered with cloth.

Meanwhile, let’s prepare the filling for momos. Add all the ingredients from the Table 2 in a mixing bowl, combine well to bind it together and set aside.

Dust the surface to roll the dough into big thin disc shape and use a mold/round shaped container lid to cut into smaller discs.

Then roll again to make it more thin and perfect shape. Dust more flour to stack up the discs.so that, they don’t stick with one another.

Place some filling we prepared in the middle of the disc and fold it to make momo shapes.

Steam the momos in the steamer for 10 - 12 minutes and serve hot with hot sauce.
